Books and railway heritage / ALNWICK
Barter Books
The former Alnwick station now invites a slower kind of journey through shelves of second-hand books. Barter Books retains the scale and character of the railway building, with seating, a model railway above the shelves and a separate Station Buffet. Browse a subject you love, share a find and leave time to linger; this is a working bookshop rather than a timed attraction.

The old station here is a bookshop, not Alnwick’s current rail arrival point. Mainline trains stop at Alnmouth, several miles away.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- Alnwick Station, Wagonway Road, Alnwick NE66 2NP, south-east of the central streets.
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- Browsing has no admission charge; books, food and drinks are purchases. The shop opens daily except Christmas Day, with the buffet closing earlier than the bookshop. Check food service times before relying on a late meal. Bringing books for exchange is optional and subject to the shop’s separate acceptance rules.
- Access and getting around
- The shop describes mostly level, wide gangways with ramps where needed, two disabled parking spaces by the front door and an accessible toilet off the main hall. Its ice-cream parlour also has wheelchair access. Parking can fill at busy times; use the official location advice before driving directly to the door.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- A children’s room and model railway add interest beyond choosing books. A supervising adult must stay with children in the children’s room. Plan a short browse and decide on a book-buying budget together.
