Ceredigion’s coast rewards a slower visit, but our two current destinations offer quite different days. Aberystwyth combines a long seafront with cultural venues uphill and a substantial railway journey inland. Aberaeron is smaller, with a planned harbour town and the Aeron valley behind it. This guide covers those two collections and their nearby visits, not every beach or inland town in the county. Decide whether you want a cultural programme, a harbour day or one main countryside outing before adding travel.

START WITH WHAT YOU ENJOY
Choose Aberystwyth when you want to balance the promenade with a library exhibition, an Arts Centre event or a planned heritage train journey. These are different parts of the visit: the cultural venues sit uphill, while the Vale of Rheidol train is a major outing rather than a town shuttle. The castle grounds provide outdoor context, but Ceredigion Museum remains unavailable during repairs.
Aberaeron suits visitors who want time around the harbour, town streets and a selected riverside stretch. The seafront is not a broad sandy resort beach, and current coastal-work notices govern access. Llanerchaeron and Tŷ Glyn are separate valley visits near Ciliau Aeron. Walking the old railway path all the way to the estate and back is a substantial addition, not a short link after lunch.
PLAN A DAY THAT WORKS
Keep Aberystwyth’s train journey or Aberaeron’s estate visit as a day’s main choice. You can combine brief town stops when transport works, but travelling between them reduces the time available for exhibitions, riverside walking and meals. A two-day plan gives the coast and the valley room; a single-day plan works best with one town and an optional short extension.
Explore a chosen part of the harbour and town trail, pause for lunch and follow a modest riverside section before returning. Follow current barriers around coastal works. If the estate is your main interest, travel to Llanerchaeron on a date when the areas you want are open instead. For a shorter visit, keep the harbour and streets and leave both the longer river route and estate for another day.
Families can compare Llanerchaeron’s house, gardens and farmyard calendar with Aberystwyth’s cliff railway or longer Vale of Rheidol trip. Different trains have different boarding and toilet arrangements, so check the exact service. Couples may prefer a harbour meal or an exhibition and performance, allowing for the uphill approach in Aberystwyth rather than treating every stop as level seafront walking.
Aberystwyth provides the stronger wet-weather comparison through the National Library and actual Arts Centre programmes, subject to their opening. The closed Ceredigion Museum is not a fallback. Aberaeron’s harbour, riverside and seafront offer free outdoor time, but wind and sea conditions matter. A partly covered train or a seasonal villa does not guarantee an all-day indoor plan on any chosen date.
Mainline rail reaches Aberystwyth; Aberaeron requires an onward road or bus journey. Within Aberystwyth, check the correct station for the Vale of Rheidol rather than assuming the mainline platform. For Llanerchaeron, decide whether you are arriving separately or undertaking the longer return walk. Confirm the last bus and any uphill or rural final approach before setting the day’s timetable.
