For an Angus coastal day, Arbroath and Montrose offer more than interchangeable beach stops. Arbroath connects lighthouse heritage, a working harbour and the abbey story; Montrose combines local collections, aviation and the changing tidal basin. These are the two places in our current Angus collection, not a guide to every glen or town in the area. Choose the subject that interests your group before arranging the journey. A museum followed by one outdoor stop gives either town room to make an impression without trying to cover the whole coast.

START WITH WHAT YOU ENJOY
Arbroath suits a day with a strong maritime thread. Begin with the Signal Tower Museum, then look at the working harbour and decide where to eat. The abbey visitor centre and available grounds offer a different historical focus, while West Links gives families a park and seafront option. St Vigeans is a separately planned village visit with limited seasonal opening, not an automatic extra after every town attraction.
Montrose is a useful choice when different interests need a clear decision. The town museum offers local context, the Air Station Museum suits aviation curiosity, and the Basin Visitor Centre provides an indoor place to watch wildlife. They are separate visits in different locations. Choose one as the anchor and add a suitable seafront pause or Ferryden lighthouse walk if conditions and energy allow.
PLAN A DAY THAT WORKS
A two-day visit can give Arbroath the harbour and lighthouse story and Montrose the basin or aviation focus. For a single day, stay with one town unless you have checked the connection and deliberately dropped a major attraction. Travelling by train still leaves journeys from the station to the chosen venue; the Basin Visitor Centre and House of Dun should not be treated as town-centre stops.
Start at the Signal Tower Museum on an open day and use its lighthouse displays to give the harbour outside some context. Leave space for lunch, then choose the abbey visitor centre and grounds or a relaxed West Links outing. The short version is simply museum, harbour and food. A performance at the Webster Memorial Theatre can finish a longer visit only when a suitable event is actually programmed and booked.
For children, a museum followed by play at West Links can be more satisfying than several historic interiors. In Montrose, aircraft or a look through the basin’s viewing equipment can give the outing a clear focus; pick according to interest rather than promising particular wildlife. Couples can spend longer over harbour history, art and objects, or make a separate booking for House of Dun instead of filling every gap with another stop.
Ordinary entry to the Signal Tower Museum and Montrose Museum is free; check their current opening days before building a wet-weather plan around them. Montrose Basin Visitor Centre and the Air Station Museum have their own admission arrangements. The air museum occupies a site with separate buildings, so rainwear can still be useful between displays. Free seafront walks are outdoor choices, not substitutes for indoor shelter when the weather deteriorates.
Montrose’s beach is affected by erosion: follow current access notices and stay away from unstable dune edges instead of relying on an old full-beach route. The Scurdie Ness walk begins at Ferryden and provides exterior lighthouse views, not a tower visit. Around Arbroath, public quays are beside working boats and vehicles. Keep walking distances flexible, and check seasonal toilets and venue opening rather than assuming every coastal facility operates year-round.
