We use the historic county for this grouping, not the boundaries of today’s Derry City and Strabane or Causeway Coast and Glens councils. Two destination collections are a starting selection rather than complete county coverage. Choose a city day when museums and walking between stops matter most; choose the Limavady area when one outdoor place can set the pace. The two approaches work better as separate days than as a checklist of every landmark.

START WITH WHAT YOU ENJOY
Derry provides the stronger comparison for a mostly urban day. A chosen section of the walls, the Guildhall and a meal can make a manageable visit without trying to see every museum. Museum of Free Derry concerns serious recent history and charges admission despite its name. Pick the subject and audience deliberately; the city’s museums are not interchangeable rainy-day entertainment.
Limavady is the starting point for Roe Valley Country Park, with Benone and Binevenagh forming different excursions beyond town. A riverside route suits a different group from an exposed hill outing. The arts centre’s scheduled programme can add a booked indoor visit, but do not treat a countryside day, beach day and hill walk as three neighbouring stops in one short afternoon.
PLAN A DAY THAT WORKS
Begin with the Guildhall on a visiting day, choose a manageable walls section and have lunch before deciding on one museum. If you have less time, keep the Guildhall and a short city walk instead of completing a circuit. For a second day, choose Roe Valley Country Park near Limavady; set the route to suit the group rather than attempting to combine it with the whole coast.
Families may prefer a short city walk with breaks or a modest riverside outing to a long sequence of historic displays. Discuss the content before booking museums about conflict. Couples wanting a quieter outdoor day can choose the Roe Valley, while city visitors can build an afternoon around an exhibition and meal. A beach excursion needs its own weather and patrol check, even in early autumn.
The city walls and selected public riverside spaces offer admission-free walking, and Roe Valley Country Park offers a contrasting outdoor choice. Budget separately for transport, parking and optional visits. Museum of Free Derry is a paid attraction: the word “Free” refers to the historical area. In Limavady, check the particular arts-centre event rather than assuming that a public building means every performance is free.
Derry has a more substantial indoor choice than an outdoor Limavady itinerary. The Tower Museum’s former Story of Derry and Armada exhibitions are closed; consult the current Derry Girls Experience offer instead of planning around old listings. Limavady’s arts programme can help when a suitable event fits, but a country park visitor building does not turn a river walk into an indoor attraction.
A sandy beach and a high, exposed landscape demand different preparation. Do not transfer Benone’s seasonal lifeguard arrangements to other beaches or assume a hill route is a gentle family circuit. Confirm rural transport and the final return service before committing to either. If the weather deteriorates, shortening the local outing is often more practical than crossing the county for an unplanned second attraction.
