Derry’s strongest free outing is a route through the city itself, with enough time to look rather than a checklist of paid attractions seen only from outside. Start with the walls, selecting a section that suits the group’s mobility. Ordinary independent access is free, while organised guided tours are a separate purchase. Take care around changes of level and current access restrictions; a street-level alternative can be preferable to forcing a complete raised circuit. The Guildhall provides a useful free indoor visit near the river, with stained glass and civic-history displays. Its guided tours are separately charged and need booking, so distinguish the ordinary visit from a tour package. Room access can be affected by civic use or events. The Peace Bridge and Ebrington Square offer another free part of the day, with venue admission, food and organised performances treated as optional spending rather than included benefits. For a simple route, explore a section of the walls, visit the Guildhall when open and have your own lunch arrangements before deciding whether to cross the river. A shorter visit can stop after the Guildhall. The Museum of Free Derry is deliberately absent from this free-admission selection: its name concerns the city’s history, and its ordinary tickets are paid. Seasonal or local offers do not establish free entry for everyone. Allow separately for transport, parking and refreshments, and choose the route for the weather rather than stretching a free outing into a tiring circuit.

Use the walls to understand the shape of Derry before exploring its streets and museums. The raised route offers changing perspectives on the enclosed city, Bogside and surrounding neighbourhoods. You can walk a selected section rather than making the complete circuit the measure of a successful visit.
Step inside the Guildhall to look at its architecture, stained glass and displays about the city’s past. It is a useful indoor starting point near the river and walls, allowing you to connect the building with the streets outside. Ordinary visits and organised guided tours have different admission arrangements.
Walk across the curving pedestrian and cycle bridge to experience the river and the city from another angle. Ebrington Square gives the crossing a useful destination, with its public space and surrounding buildings. Treat it as a river walk rather than a promise that every venue or event on the far bank is open.
