Enniskillen and Lisnaskea give our County Fermanagh guide two different starting points: a town with museums and evening performances, and a smaller base for Upper Lough Erne outings. This is selected coverage of the historic county, not a promise to cover every island, cave or lakeside estate. It also differs from the modern Fermanagh and Omagh council area. Decide whether you want a town day or an estate or activity booking before drawing a route around the water; a nearby-looking shoreline is not necessarily a quick connection.

START WITH WHAT YOU ENJOY
Enniskillen is the stronger choice for a day that can move between museums, a meal and a short street walk. The castle combines two museums under a paid admission arrangement; Headhunters offers a smaller railway collection with free entry. An Ardhowen performance is a separate booking and arrival point. Castle Coole lies outside the centre, with house tours distinct from estate access.
Lisnaskea works as a starting point for Crom or a booked activity at SHARE, rather than a town packed with indoor attractions. Castle Balfour currently offers an exterior heritage stop while its interior is closed for conservation. Make the rural visit the main event and leave the town’s smaller heritage choices optional, especially if a water activity already fixes your arrival time.
PLAN A DAY THAT WORKS
Start with Enniskillen Castle Museums, have lunch in town and add Headhunters if its current visiting hours fit. Choose a short section of the public-art streets for an outdoor finish rather than promising a full waterfront circuit through works. With less time, keep one museum and lunch. An evening theatre ticket can extend the day, but allow separately for reaching the Ardhowen.
A SHARE session may suit an active family, provided the specific activity’s ages, supervision and booking arrangements work for everyone. Public sessions and arranged groups are different offers. For two people wanting a gentler pace, Crom’s estate landscape is a different choice. Its modern castle is private; plan for the estate and old ruins rather than expecting a house tour.
Headhunters provides a free railway-museum option without requiring a haircut, and selected town streets need no attraction ticket. At Enniskillen Castle, free entry to visitor information is not free admission to the castle grounds and museums. Crom and Castle Coole have admission arrangements of their own. A photograph of an estate or castle does not tell you which areas a ticket includes.
The town’s museum choices give more shelter than a lakeside estate or ruined church. Check gallery-specific access where historic buildings have different floors and entrances. A theatre only supplies an indoor activity when a suitable performance or event is actually scheduled. Lisnaskea’s castle exterior and Crom’s paths should not be presented as substitutes for a full indoor visit.
Look up the actual entrance and return journey for Crom, SHARE or Castle Coole; reaching Lisnaskea or Enniskillen alone may not complete the trip. Estate gates and house calendars can differ, so check both before travelling. Allow time to change clothes after a booked water activity. For a short visit without convenient transport, an Enniskillen town plan avoids unnecessary rural transfers.
