Autumn goose movements can be impressive, but dawn or dusk activity is not the same as ordinary daytime opening; check a specific event if that is why you are travelling. House of Dun offers a different kind of outing, with a guided visit, garden and courtyard. Allow a substantial part of the day and confirm the available route before booking, especially if stairs are an issue. Its location west of town means it is not a quick addition to a long coastal walk. For an active option, use the Ferryden–Scurdie Ness return route in suitable conditions, then head back for food. The shorter alternative is one cultural or wildlife visit and lunch. Make restaurant plans independently and keep a coastal sunset optional rather than relying on safe weather or access after dark.

The visitor centre offers a comfortable starting point for people who do not already know the species or where to look. Ask about recent sightings and tide conditions rather than arriving with a promise of one particular bird.

The formal rooms and household stories give the building character, while the Angus Folk Collection adds another view of local life. This is a separate outing west of Montrose, best enjoyed without racing back to a second major attraction.

Seals and dolphins are possibilities rather than an appointment, and the sea views make the walk worthwhile without them.
Choose a short seafront outing for wide skies and the changing view towards Scurdie Ness. On a suitable day, time on the sand can sit naturally alongside a museum visit or lunch in town. Keep the plan flexible: this is an actively changing coastline, and a rewarding visit does not depend on walking the whole beach.
Make room for the human stories as well as the aircraft. Exhibitions across the former air-station site explore the people who served here, while recreated spaces and aviation displays help explain how military life changed. It is a visit for a curious couple of hours, not simply a photograph beside a plane.
