Scurdie Ness lighthouse walk

Walk out from Ferryden for views of the South Esk meeting the sea, with the lighthouse providing a clear turning point. Take the time to watch harbour movements and scan the water from a sensible distance. Seals and dolphins are possibilities rather than an appointment, and the sea views make the walk worthwhile without them.

Before you go

The lighthouse is an outdoor walking destination, not a promised tower tour. Start from Ferryden on the south side of the river; seeing it from Montrose Beach does not mean it is a short walk along the same shore.

Tickets and booking: Walking is free. Use appropriate village parking without blocking homes or working access. Check conditions and allow extra time from central Montrose; no café or toilet stop is promised at the lighthouse.
Access and getting around: The council describes a surfaced private road to the lighthouse, with a moderate climb through Ferryden followed by a gentler section. Allow for exposure and any current surface problems. The fields beyond add different terrain and are not part of this short return recommendation.

Visiting with children: The approximately two-mile return suits children comfortable with that distance and the weather. Keep close around traffic, shore edges and exposed sections. Turn back early if the wind or everyone’s energy changes.
