Visit for the story of the Declaration of Arbroath and the abbey’s role in Scottish history, beginning with the visitor-centre exhibitions. The accessible visitor route and grounds offer views of the striking ruins, but access around historic masonry can change. Plan around what Historic Environment Scotland currently opens rather than expecting unrestricted exploration of every abbey building.

- Book for the actual visitor offer. Parts of the abbey have been subject to masonry restrictions; confirm current access directly. Last entry is 45minutes before closing, with winter hours and holiday closures differing.
- Access and getting around
- The visitor centre’s ground-floor exhibition has step-free entry. Its upper exhibition uses stone stairs and is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with serious walking difficulties. Grounds include grass and gravel; check the current permitted route.

- Choose a few objects or stories in the exhibition and allow a short look at the grounds. Keep to the open route and do not promise a climb around every part of the ruins.
