Muir of Dinnet and Burn o’Vat

Use the visitor centre as your starting point for a carefully chosen reserve walk near Dinnet. Burn o’Vat is the striking granite bowl many visitors come to see, but entering it involves uneven stepping stones and is optional. The reserve also offers woodland, loch views and evidence of earlier settlement, so choose a route for the day you have rather than making the Vat an obligatory scramble.

Before you go

A firm approach path does not make the Vat itself accessible to everyone. Stop before the slippery stepping stones if conditions or mobility make the entrance unsuitable.

Tickets and booking: No ordinary reserve admission ticket is required. Check current visitor-centre hours and local notices. This guide recommends land-based visits, not paddling or swimming in wildlife lochs.
Access and getting around: NatureScot describes a moderate slope on the lower Vat approach, slippery entrance stones and a steeper narrow return circuit. Accessible picnic benches near the centre do not mean all trails are accessible. Toilets are available, with centre hours changing in winter.

Visiting with children: The displays can help children understand the landscape before a short walk. Adults should judge wet rocks and stream conditions; choose the approach or another suitable section instead of insisting on entering the Vat.
