BAMBURGH GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

The rescue story behind a national heroine / BAMBURGH

RNLI Grace Darling Museum

Follow Grace Darling’s life and the 1838 rescue through personal objects, letters, portraits and the coble used by Grace and her father. The small museum brings the offshore lighthouse story into the village, opposite St Aidan’s Church. Allow time to understand the rescue and its aftermath rather than making it only a quick stop between larger sights.

Before you go

Check the museum’s latest opening update, especially at weekends. It relies on volunteers and currently advertises an early last-entry time, so plan a morning or early-afternoon visit.

The practical details

Where to find it
Radcliffe Road, Bamburgh NE69 7AE
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Ordinary entry is free, with donations supporting the RNLI. Opening depends on volunteer availability; check the linked latest updates for weekends and short-notice changes. School and organised group visits need separate arrangements. Do not rely on old seasonal hours in downloadable leaflets.
Access and getting around
The main displays are on the ground floor; ask staff about your particular access needs and any upper-level visit. There are no ordinary visitor toilets inside: public toilets are on Church Street. Staff facilities may be made available for access or medical needs on request. Assistance dogs are welcome.

Visiting with children
The rescue boat and lighthouse story provide a clear focus for children. Discuss the shipwreck theme sensitively and choose a few objects rather than reading everything. Use the public toilets before the visit if needed; other dogs cannot come inside, so dog owners may need to take turns.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 45–75 minutes for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
