St Aidan’s Church and Bamburgh Bones
Visit the parish church and discover the stories revealed by archaeological work at the Bowl Hole cemetery. The crypt holds modern ossuary boxes containing the remains of early medieval people, with interpretation explaining their lives. You can also explore the digital interpretation in the church without descending into the darker crypt.

- Ordinary crypt access is free, with donations welcomed. Check church services, events and opening before visiting; talks or organised visits have their own arrangements. Respect quiet prayer and funerals, and do not assume the church and crypt share identical access.
- Access and getting around
- The crypt approach crosses uneven grass in the graveyard, then uses an external staircase and further steps; it is dark inside. A subtitled projection and digital ossuary are also available at the rear of the church, with a portable ramp stored in the porch for church access. Ask for help with the ramp and confirm arrangements. No toilets in the church.

- This is a place of worship and a resting place, with interpretation of human remains. Decide whether the subject suits your children and keep the crypt optional. The church-level presentation may be more comfortable for anyone who dislikes darkness or steps.
