The Knap Lake and Gardens

Take a slower walk around the harp-shaped lake and garden planting at the Knap. The formal setting and water birds offer a contrast to Whitmore Bay’s busier seaside atmosphere, making this a good place for a pause or a shorter outing. You can look towards the neighbouring pebble shore without committing to the longer coastal route to Porthkerry.

Before you go

The Knap’s shore is pebbly, unlike Whitmore Bay’s sand. Choose the gardens for an easier pause rather than promising sandcastles on this part of the coast.

Tickets and booking: Ordinary garden access is free. Dogs must be kept on leads in the gardens; separate seasonal restrictions apply to Cold Knap beach. Parking and refreshments are extra.
Access and getting around: Choose the garden paths that suit your mobility and check entrances and current conditions. Access onto loose pebbles is different from a garden walk; the route towards Porthkerry includes steep ground.

Visiting with children: Keep children close beside the lake and give swans and ducks space. A small picnic and a look at the planting can be enough after a more active stop.
