Spittal Promenade and Beach

Spend a separate part of the day on the south side of the Tweed, where Spittal’s promenade overlooks a long sandy beach. The play area and room for a short seafront stroll give families a different pace from the old town. Decide how you will return before heading down onto the sand.

Before you go

Spittal is not directly below the town walls: allow around 40–50 minutes each way on foot from central Berwick, or check a local bus or taxi. Splash-park operation is seasonal and weather dependent, so keep it optional.

Tickets and booking: The beach and promenade do not need an entry ticket. Check seasonal café, toilet and splash-park operation, and arrange a beach wheelchair directly rather than expecting a walk-up loan. Carry snacks or buy lunch before leaving the town.
Access and getting around: The promenade offers a firmer route than the beach. A concrete ramp reaches the sand, with soft sand at its foot that can be difficult to push across. Beach Access North East offers bookable equipment after registration; give at least 24 hours’ notice and confirm availability. A RADAR-key toilet is near the Pavilion; the Changing Places facility is separately at Northern View, Highcliffe.

Visiting with children: Use the promenade and play area when beach conditions are poor. Check the tide, weather, current beach notices and available supervision before considering the water. High tide can leave little sand; do not make swimming or splash-park opening essential to the day.
