BERWICK-UPON-TWEED GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Guided civic rooms and former jail / BERWICK-UPON-TWEED

Berwick Town Hall Tour

Join a guided visit inside the building that dominates Marygate. The tour links the civic rooms with the upper-floor jail, giving the grand exterior a more human story. It is a scheduled guided experience: the cell block is not an independently open museum that you can drop into between other stops.

Before you go

Allow the full one to two hours and a little arrival time. Ordinary tours run on weekdays from Easter to the end of September; check a specific date before building a wet-weather day around one.

Access and getting around
The tour entrance has two steps without a handrail, then 22 steps to the first floor and 29 more to the second. Contact the Keeper in advance about staff-operated stairclimbing equipment and its weight limits. The wheelchair-in-place option serves the first floor only. Visiting with children
Best for children willing to listen to a guided account and negotiate the stairs. Prison stories and cells may not suit every child. Discuss access or a shorter participation option before arriving; do not assume you can leave a pushchair at the entrance.
