Walls, a small museum and the Tweed →
A compact first visit on an afternoon when the Main Guard is open. Keep the route on the north side of the river and leave time for lunch.
Elizabethan defences and town views / BERWICK-UPON-TWEED
Follow the grassy bastions and stone defences around the old town, looking between roofs, the Tweed and the sea. The compact Elizabethan circuit makes the shape of this border town easier to understand. Stop at interpretation panels and choose a section if a whole circuit would use up your walking energy.

Start with the walls while visibility and wind are favourable. They connect with the town streets at several points, so you can leave the route for lunch instead of completing a loop at all costs.
Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.
Allow 1–1½ hours with stops for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
