River Tweed Quayside and Bridges

Walk the north-bank quayside below the old town for a different view of Berwick. The low arches of the Old Bridge sit in front of the Royal Tweed road bridge, with the much taller Royal Border railway viaduct upstream. You can appreciate the sequence from the waterfront without turning it into a lengthy bridge-crossing circuit.

Before you go

Use a short out-and-back from the Old Bridge area, then return to Bridge Street for food. An upstream extension needs extra time and a checked route; the Royal Border Bridge carries trains and is not a pedestrian crossing.

Tickets and booking: No attraction ticket is needed for the public quayside. Boat trips, food and parking are separate. Keep the route in daylight and adapt to wind, tide and local notices; this is not a plan to walk onto the railway viaduct or along the pier.
Access and getting around: Approaches from the upper town can be steep or stepped, and the waterfront includes uneven paving, traffic and open water edges. Choose a suitable street approach and check current works before setting out. Keep clear of working access and use designated pedestrian routes if crossing a road bridge.

Visiting with children: Supervise beside the tidal river and roads. Looking for a passing train on the distant viaduct can make a short pause interesting, but trains and wildlife will not appear to order. Choose a definite turning point before children tire.
