A quiet medieval church by the Conwy / BETWS-Y-COED

St Michael’s Old Church

Step away from the main shopping street to the small medieval church between the railway and the River Conwy. Inside, the stone effigy of Gruffydd ap Dafydd Goch provides a focus for a short history visit; outside, the churchyard gives the village a quieter setting. This is St Michael’s, separate from the larger St Mary’s church by the start of the Llyn Elsi walk.

Pair it with the railway museum area rather than making a special winter journey without checking access. Outside the main season, key collection depends on someone being available at the museum.

Tickets and booking: Normally open 10am–5pm from Easter to the end of October, according to the church-provided listing. Outside that period a key is normally held at the railway museum; confirm both are available. Ordinary visits have no advertised admission charge and donations support upkeep. Check service dates, including around St Michael’s Day.
Access and getting around: Contact the Friends about entrances, thresholds, suitable approaches and toilet facilities if needed. Choose the route to suit your mobility rather than assuming the railway bridge is suitable. Keep to paths in the churchyard.

Visiting with children: A brief look at the old church and effigy can work alongside the miniature railway. Keep voices low and supervise beside the river and graves. There are occasional services, so be ready to shorten sightseeing when worship is taking place.
