Big Pit National Coal Museum

Make Big Pit the main part of the day. The surface displays explain working lives, while the optional guided underground visit puts that history into the setting of a real mine. These are different experiences: general museum entry is free, but the underground tour normally has a charge. A surface-only visit can still be worthwhile for anyone unable or unwilling to descend.

Before you go

Book a timed underground place if that is central to your visit. Allow time for preparation, the tour and a food break rather than arriving shortly before another booking.

Tickets and booking: General museum entry is free; ordinary underground admission is paid, with limited on-arrival tickets or advance timed tickets. Parking is separate. The summer 2026 free underground offer has ended. Confirm winter tours before travel. Phones, cameras and other prohibited items are stored on the surface during the underground tour.
Access and getting around: The site has steep ramps and uneven surfaces. Wheelchair users and visitors with limited mobility must contact the museum before visiting; underground access needs specific arrangements and approved manual chairs. Assistance dogs and pushchairs cannot go underground.

Visiting with children: Children must be at least one metre tall and able to wear the safety equipment; under-16s need an adult. Discuss darkness and enclosed spaces before choosing the tour. There are no underground toilets.
