Blaenafon Ironworks

Explore the scale of the ironmaking site and then look more closely at the furnished workers’ cottages. The contrast helps connect the industrial structures with everyday domestic life. This is a largely open-air historic site with some indoor interpretation, so wear suitable shoes and allow time to pause rather than treating it as a quick photograph.

The upper structures involve a steep climb. You can focus a shorter visit on the lower site and cottages without making every level the objective.

Tickets and booking: Paid admission. Winter opening is restricted to Friday–Sunday, with holiday exceptions; check the current calendar and last entry. There is no café on site, so plan lunch separately.
Access and getting around: Lower surfaces are rough gravel, cottage doors have threshold lips and upper levels require a steep incline. The approach involves crossing Estate Road. Read Cadw’s access guide for the route and facilities.

Visiting with children: Compare objects and rooms in the cottages rather than expecting a hands-on play attraction. Watch children around uneven historic surfaces; there are toilets but no baby-changing facilities.
