A gentle introduction to Bourton / BOURTON-ON-THE-WATER
Windrush bridges and village greens
Follow the River Windrush through the village centre, crossing the low stone bridges where suitable and looking back towards the honey-coloured buildings. The greens give you somewhere to pause between attractions, with shops and places to eat nearby. Keep this a short, flexible wander rather than treating every bridge as a required crossing.

Come earlier in the day if you want more room on the narrow crossings. Leave space for residents and other walkers, and choose a riverside bench or patch of green without blocking paths.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- River Windrush, High Street, Bourton-on-the-Water
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- There is no village admission ticket. Parking, food and individual attractions cost extra. Check current car-park restrictions and allow time to walk from your chosen parking area; do not depend on finding a space beside the river.
- Access and getting around
- The centre is generally flat, but individual bridges, kerbs and older shop entrances vary. You can enjoy the river without crossing every bridge. Check the approach that suits your chair or walking aid; public accessible toilets are listed on High Street and Rissington Road and may need a RADAR key.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- Keep young children close beside the water and road crossings. Counting bridges or matching a building seen in the Model Village gives a short walk a purpose. Bring layers and plan a toilet stop before settling for a picnic.
