Newcastle Castle
Climb Newcastle Hill for a short castle visit that fits around the town rather than taking over the day. Look closely at the carved doorway and the surviving enclosure, imagining why a defensive site stood above the river crossing. This is an open ruin, so the pleasure lies in noticing the stonework and setting rather than expecting furnished rooms.

Choose this castle when you want history without leaving central Bridgend. Allow for the climb and entrance steps; a small site is not automatically an easy-access site.

- Entry is free during Cadw’s advertised daytime opening, with a last-entry cut-off and some Christmas/New Year closures. Check the current notice and use legitimate town parking; leave time for the uphill approach.
- Access and getting around
- Cadw describes a sloping lower approach and eight stone steps without a handrail before the relatively level castle grounds. Low masonry and uneven surfaces require care. There is no dedicated visitor car park.

- Look for the doorway and defensive walls, keeping children off the ruins. A short visit followed by a snack usually works better than expecting extensive activities or shelter.
