Chepstow Castle

Follow the castle’s long sequence of courtyards to see how a stronghold changed over centuries above the river. The surviving buildings, old doors and views reward an unhurried visit, with enough variety to make this the main stop rather than a quick photograph. You can enjoy the ground-level story without insisting on every tower and wall walk.

The approach and main route climb, even where there are no steps. Check the access guide and current notices before booking; toilets are outside the castle in the opposite public car park.

Tickets and booking: Paid entry is available through Cadw; check seasonal hours, last admission and temporary notices. Cadw currently advertises a later 10:00 opening on 17 September 2026. Do not expect a café or toilets inside the monument.
Access and getting around: The approach from the car park is uphill, and the long main path becomes steeper near the Great Tower. Many lower areas are step-free but towers and wall walks involve staircases; cobbles and bridges also vary. Read Cadw’s route information for your mobility needs.

Visiting with children: Choose a few features to find and supervise on stairs, parapets and uneven ground. The open courtyards leave much of the visit exposed, so bring layers and use a toilet before entering.
