CHEPSTOW GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Railway memories, play and riverside space / NEAR CHEPSTOW

Old Station Tintern

Use the old station as a slower family or picnic outing, with railway buildings, open space and a short walk beside the Wye. In season the carriage displays and tearoom add another reason to linger, while miniature train rides run separately when conditions allow. It is distinct from the abbey and works best with its own time rather than as a rushed afterthought.

Before you go

Grounds access and staffed facilities have different seasons. Check the current timetable before promising a train ride, and remember that parking, food and rides are separate from free entry.

The practical details

Where to find it
Old Station, Tintern NP16 7NX
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Ordinary grounds entry is free with paid parking. Facilities are advertised April–October, Tuesday–Sunday with bank-holiday exceptions; grounds have broader access. Check closing and lower-car-park gate times. Miniature rides and refreshments cost extra, and the station is north of the abbey, not on the same site.
Access and getting around
The visitor listing identifies level or ramped access to the tearoom and adapted toilets when facilities open. Check the route for a particular riverside walk rather than assuming all paths are equally suitable. An accessible miniature-railway carriage is offered with arrangements to confirm in advance.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Choose available play, a short walk or a booked-in-time miniature ride according to age and energy. Under-tens must be accompanied on the train; rides depend on weather and published operating slots. Supervise beside the river.
