Wyndcliff Wood and Eagle’s Nest
Choose Wyndcliff when the walk itself is the outing: steep woodland paths lead to a viewpoint over the looping river and wider landscape. The distance is fairly short, but the climb, uneven steps and drops make it a deliberate walking choice. Clear conditions add to the reward; the view is not a drive-up stop.
The official Eagle’s Nest route is graded strenuous. Avoiding the famous 365 Steps does not create an easy or step-free alternative: the other approach is still steep and the viewpoint has steps.

- Walking and parking are free, with no overnight parking. The site is unstaffed and the postcode covers a wide area, so follow NRW’s directions. Check closures and weather, wear suitable footwear and leave time for the descent.
- Access and getting around
- Expect steep uneven paths, long stair flights and drops, with a road crossing from the car park. This route is unsuitable for pushchairs and is not a wheelchair-accessible viewpoint. Read the current NRW trail notice and turn back if conditions exceed your ability.

- Reserve this for older children who are comfortable with steep walking and close supervision. It is not a substitute for a gentle family park; the Old Station is the easier nearby option for many groups.
