Chirk Aqueduct and canal

Watch the canal cross the valley beside the railway viaduct and enjoy a short towpath outing at your own pace. The aqueduct is the main sight; the nearby tunnel is an optional extension for people comfortable with a dark, narrow waterside path. A satisfying visit does not depend on crossing every structure or walking through the tunnel.

Before you go

Chirk Aqueduct is not Pontcysyllte Aqueduct at Trevor. They belong to the same World Heritage waterway but are separate places, and this visit crosses the Wales–England border over the Ceiriog.

Tickets and booking: The towpath is normally open daily and walking is free, with parking and refreshments separate. Check current canal notices and weather. Parking close to the canal is limited; town parking and public toilets require planning.
Access and getting around: Check the chosen approach for gradients, steps and narrow surfaces. The exposed aqueduct path and dark tunnel may not suit everyone; turn back or view the structures from a comfortable permitted place. Do not assume all towpath access is step-free.

Visiting with children: Keep children close beside the open canal and give way carefully to other users. The tunnel can be dark and wet, so bring a torch if you choose it and omit it when anyone is uncomfortable. Do not enter the water.
