Chirk Castle and Garden

Make the castle the main outing rather than a quick stop after a long walk. Its change from fortress to family home gives the furnished rooms a different story from the medieval tower, while the gardens provide space to slow down afterwards. Choose the parts that interest your group and leave time for the approach, food and a rest.

Before you go

The estate gates are not the castle entrance. From Chirk station the whole approach is around a mile and a half, and the final route from the visitor car park climbs uphill.

Tickets and booking: Check the date calendar, last-entry times and high-wind notices before travelling. The wider estate and parking are free, but admission is needed for the castle, gardens and tearoom. Do not assume free estate access includes those areas.
Access and getting around: The Trust states that the castle interior has no wheelchair or step-free access. An accessible garden route and accessible toilets are available. The volunteer shuttle is not guaranteed every day, and mobility equipment should be reserved; discuss the exact visit you want.

Visiting with children: Mix a short look at appropriate rooms with gardens or the Home Farm play area. Tower and dungeon stairs need close supervision; a seasonal trail should be checked before it becomes the main promise of the day.
