Chirk and River Ceiriog circular walk

Choose this official circular route when walking itself is the main plan. It links Chirk, estate paths, pasture, woodland and the Ceiriog, with sections across the English border before returning towards town. The variety is rewarding for prepared walkers, but the distance and terrain make it very different from a short aqueduct visit.

Before you go

The council’s full route is seven miles and suggests about four hours before generous breaks. Take the actual route leaflet and a map; do not treat a few summary directions as enough navigation.

Tickets and booking: Walking the permitted route is free, with transport, parking and paid castle admission separate. Check current access and weather before setting off. The leaflet gives an alternative to the tunnel; use it if darkness or the narrow towpath is unsuitable.
Access and getting around: The route includes steep wooded ground, stiles, pasture and road crossings, including a faster road near Castle Mill. It is not a wheelchair or pushchair route. Check path permissions and conditions, especially seasonal estate links and wet ground.

Visiting with children: Suitable only for children already comfortable with a substantial countryside walk. Carry food, water and layers, and choose the shorter canal outing if distance, livestock or steep sections would make the day difficult.
