Dartmouth Castle

The castle explains why this narrow river entrance mattered: guns and a great harbour chain helped protect the trading town upstream. Explore the gun tower and battery displays, then look back across the water that shaped their design. Its position makes the journey part of the outing, but allow time for the interior rather than arriving only for a photograph.

The site has many steps and steep spiral stairs, with no lift. The seasonal Castle Ferry is a separate fare and its landing also involves steps.

Tickets and booking: Book or check admission for your date and allow for seasonal closing times. Limited paid parking and the neighbouring tearoom are independently operated. The current directions page gives a roadworks diversion; consult it before driving rather than following the shortest town route.
Access and getting around: Wheelchair access is very restricted by slopes, steps and uneven paths. Upper floors have narrow spiral stairs and there is no lift. Nearby toilets have no accessible cubicle or baby changing; discuss the route with the site before travelling.

Visiting with children: Weaponry displays and an activity trail give children a focus. EH recommends leaving pushchairs at the top of the site because of the steps. Supervise closely on stairs and near the cliff edge; some installations include sound and lighting.
