Bayard’s Cove Fort

This compact riverside fort was the town’s final line of defence after ships had passed the larger castles at the estuary entrance. Step inside its open stone enclosure and look through the gun openings to understand the position. It works best as a short stop on a waterfront wander, with time afterwards for the old quay and a drink in town.

Open in daylight and reached only on foot. Steps, uneven stone and a drop to the water make this a place to explore carefully, not to climb the walls.

Where to find it: At the southern end of Bayard’s Cove, Dartmouth TQ6 9AX.

Tickets and booking: Free general entry during daylight throughout the year, subject to local notices. There is no on-site café or toilet; use Dartmouth town facilities. Parking is paid separately.
Access and getting around: The fort lies about 50 metres from the road, reached from Bayard’s Cove Road or down steps from Southtown. EH flags steep stairs and uneven surfaces. It is not a dependable step-free addition to a town walk.

Visiting with children: Keep children close beside the water and inside the fort; do not climb or jump from walls. The short visit can introduce the idea of defending the harbour without a long museum session. Use town toilets before continuing.
