DEAL GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Coastal fortress / DEAL

Deal Castle

Explore a low, rounded fortress built to defend the shore rather than a hilltop palace. Its coastal position makes more sense after a look along the beach: this was a working defence facing the Channel. Choose a route through the displays and open parts of the fort, leaving time to appreciate the shape of the walls from outside.

Before you go

The dark, narrow passage known as the Rounds is optional. Discuss confined spaces and stairs before making it the highlight for a child.
