The White Cliffs of Dover

Walk above the Channel for chalk scenery, grassland and views over the working port. A short outing from the National Trust visitor centre gives a different day from walking all the way to South Foreland. Pick a turnaround point that leaves everyone enough energy for the return; the sea view is the purpose, not reaching a distant landmark at any cost.

Before you go

Use the National Trust walking directions. The apparent road shortcut towards the castle is narrow and lacks a footway.

Tickets and booking: Walking entry is free; parking and optional guided attractions cost extra. Check the current car-park gate closing time and visitor-centre hours. A National Trust visit does not include Dover Castle admission.
Access and getting around: There is step-free access from parking towards the visitor facilities, but the coastal routes include slopes and uneven ground. Read the linked access information for the section you want; a lighthouse walk is a more demanding outing.

Visiting with children: Stay well back from unfenced cliff edges and keep children close. Choose a short route in settled weather; strong wind, fog or slippery paths are reasons to change the plan. Bring layers and water.
