Connect Dumbarton’s industrial story with time outdoors across the Leven.
Shipbuilding experiments inside the historic works / DUMBARTON
Visit the Dumbarton branch of the Scottish Maritime Museum to understand how ship designs were tested before full-size vessels took shape. The long experimental tank, ship models and historic working spaces make this a focused industrial-history visit. Seasonal family activities may add another way into the story, but check what is actually offered on your day.

Use the Dumbarton visitor and access information, not that for the museum’s separate Irvine site.
Practical information checked 16 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.
Allow 1–1.5 hours for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
