Caerlaverock Castle

Make Caerlaverock a deliberate outing beyond town, with time to explore the unusual moated castle and its setting. Much of the ruin is open, but conservation still limits some areas, so the visit is about the accessible rooms and courtyard rather than every tower. Allow for the journey and an outdoor approach before planning another attraction afterwards.

Tickets and booking: Ordinary entry is paid, with reduced pricing while restrictions remain. Book ahead to guarantee entry and check current opening, last admission and weather notices. Do not assume the whole castle has reopened.
Access and getting around: The visitor centre is step-free, but the castle approach includes slopes, mixed surfaces and a short steep grassy descent. Some courtyard routes are level; other rooms and upper areas require steps or spiral stairs. Adapted toilets are beside the visitor centre.

Visiting with children: Choose an exploration that fits the children’s stamina and supervise around the moat and uneven ruins. A picnic or town meal afterwards can be a better second stop than another large site.
