Dunstable Downs

Come for the open chalk landscape and choose a walk that leaves time to enjoy the views. A short outing from the visitor centre can be as satisfying as a longer route over the Downs. The exposed setting is part of the appeal, so dress for the wind and keep the plan flexible.

Before you go

Start with the multi-user path if you need a more manageable route, and ask about current conditions. Other paths have slopes and uneven ground; a café nearby does not make the Downs a wet-weather indoor attraction.

Tickets and booking: Access to the Downs is free; parking, refreshments, equipment and some events cost separately. Parking systems are being updated during September 2026: follow the current signs and National Trust notice.
Access and getting around: The visitor centre offers level access, accessible toilets and Blue Badge parking. A multi-user path crosses part of the Downs; other routes vary. Tramper hire needs advance booking, and the whole landscape is not step-free.

Visiting with children: Choose a short route and supervise children on slopes. Kite flying needs suitable conditions and space away from other people; check local guidance rather than assuming a windy day is automatically suitable.
