Before you go

Reserve admission before committing to your day. The approach and grounds involve gradients, and moving between buildings means exposure to the weather. Leave large luggage elsewhere: the castle does not store it.

Where to find it: Castlehill, at the western end of the Royal Mile. The final approach crosses the uphill esplanade.

Tickets and booking: Book online for your date; the operator warns that tickets can sell out in advance. Leave an arrival buffer and avoid a second timed attraction immediately afterwards.
Access and getting around: The official access guide describes the uphill approach and arrangements within the site.
