Ely Museum

The Old Gaol houses a museum about the people who shaped Ely and the surrounding Fens. Eel fishing, fen skating and the relationship between water and land give a useful context for the riverside outside. This is a manageable indoor visit to put before a walk, particularly if you want local history beyond the cathedral and Cromwell.

Tickets and booking: Ordinary visitors can buy admission at reception without prebooking. The regular week is Tuesday–Sunday, with Monday opening on bank holidays; check special closures and the later Sunday start. Normal admission gives a year of return visits. Compare the Cromwell joint ticket or four-venue Passport if both dates and interests fit.
Access and getting around: There is step-free access from the street and an enclosed lift between floors. An accessible toilet is on the ground floor, with baby changing on both floors. Check the museum’s access information for sensory resources and any current quiet sessions.

Visiting with children: Children have a paid ticket, with under-fives free and a family ticket available. The museum’s explorer kits can help focus a visit; leave space afterwards for food and movement rather than adding a second long indoor stop.
