River walk and gardens / ELY
Ely Riverside and Jubilee Gardens
Use the River Great Ouse for a change of pace after the city’s indoor visits. Watch the boats, follow a short stretch of the bank and turn into Jubilee Gardens for planting and a pause away from the main streets. A short out-and-back walk works well here: you can decide how far to go once you have seen the weather and everyone’s energy.

Start with the gardens and the nearest river stretch if time is short. Keep children away from the water’s edge and check the return route before extending the walk.
The practical details
- Where to find it
- Jubilee Gardens and Waterside, Ely CB7 4BJ
Directions and arrival information ↗ - Tickets and booking
- The garden and public riverside walk are free and do not require a ticket. Café purchases and parking are separate costs. Check notices after heavy rain and keep longer walks within daylight; bandstand events and boat trips are not included in an ordinary garden visit.
- Access and getting around
- The council describes Jubilee Gardens as flat, without steps, with hard paths. This does not cover every onward riverside route: inspect surfaces and turn back if muddy or flooded. Public toilets are at Ship Lane car park a short walk away; check opening on the day.
Official access information ↗ - Visiting with children
- The gardens’ play equipment is aimed at ages two to five. Older children may prefer the larger Country Park play area. Bring a snack, supervise closely beside the river and leave time for a toilet stop rather than assuming facilities inside the gardens.
