Oliver Cromwell’s House

Period rooms and an audio tour introduce Cromwell’s family life alongside the Civil War. Moving from domestic rooms into the political story offers a different view of Ely from the cathedral. Cromwell remains a divisive historical figure; allow time for the interpretation rather than treating the house simply as an old cottage to photograph.

Before you go

The house contains dim rooms, audio effects and moving figures. Discuss this before taking a child who dislikes surprises, and ask staff which rooms to shorten or skip.

The practical details

Where to find it
29 St Mary’s Street, Ely CB7 4HF
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Ordinary house visits do not normally need advance booking. Allow the full tour time before last entry, and check shorter November–March hours or group-related changes. The Ely Museum joint ticket needs a day when that museum is open. A carer accompanying a disabled visitor enters free.
Access and getting around
The visitor information centre and Parlour have wheelchair access. Upper rooms require stairs; floors can be uneven and doorways low. Confirm the current kitchen route directly before a visit that depends on step-free access. Ask for the alternative audio and written material if stairs prevent the full tour. No visitor toilet: plan a Palace Green stop.

Visiting with children
Family audio, costumes and games provide ways into the history, but the dark rooms and animated mannequins will not suit every child. Under-sixes enter free with an adult; older children and families have paid ticket options.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow 45–75 minutes for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
