Exeter Custom House

Go inside the red-brick Custom House to understand the waterfront you have just walked through. Displays connect the cloth trade, shipping and the growth of Exeter, while the ornate upstairs plaster ceilings reward looking at the building itself. It is a small, free indoor stop that adds context to the quay rather than filling an entire rainy day.

From November to March the published opening reduces to Thursday–Sunday. Some heritage rooms can close for private events, so check ahead if the upstairs ceilings are your main reason for coming.

Tickets and booking: General admission is free; some events are ticketed. Summer opening is daily April–October, winter Thursday–Sunday November–March. Last admission is 30 minutes before closing. Parts of the heritage display may close for private events.
Access and getting around: The ground floor has step-free access and an accessible toilet. A lift serves the first floor: ask reception for access. Assistance dogs are welcome. Contact staff about any particular event requirements.

Visiting with children: A manageable introduction to the quay’s history. Buggies may be left on the ground floor at the owner’s risk. There is no café inside; allow a separate food stop at the quayside.
