Step away from Queen Street into gardens laid around the old city defences. Trees, memorials and surviving wall sections offer a short change of pace between the museum and the shops. Come for a pause or a little local history rather than a large park expedition, and leave the length of your visit to the weather and your energy.

The gardens close at dusk, so move this stop earlier as days shorten. Access can also change for events; check entrances rather than building the return journey around an assumed open gate.
