Exeter’s Underground Passages

Discover the maintenance tunnels built around the pipes that supplied medieval Exeter with fresh water. A short film and interactive heritage displays explain the engineering before a guide takes you into the passages. This is a memorable compact visit for people comfortable in enclosed spaces, rather than a spacious underground museum that everyone can explore independently.

Before you go

Read the physical restrictions before buying: the tunnels are narrow and low, and unsuitable for claustrophobia. Book ahead and arrive 15 minutes before the tour; late arrivals cannot join once it starts.

Tickets and booking: Advance booking is advisable, particularly during holidays and weekends. Current term-time opening is Thursday–Sunday; summer-holiday arrangements differ. Allow for the 10-minute film and 25-minute tour. The entrance is on Paris Street, not at the Corn Exchange box office.
Access and getting around: Wheelchairs and pushchairs can access the exhibition only. The fully enclosed passages have low and constricted sections and controlled lighting. Contact the venue about individual access or health concerns before booking.

Visiting with children: Under-5s cannot take the underground tour but may enter the exhibition free with an adult. Ages 5–17 need an accompanying adult underground. Being old enough does not mean a child will enjoy confined spaces.
