EXETER GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Walks & outdoors / EXETER

Exeter Historic Quayside

Walk beside the River Exe to see warehouses, the old transit shed and the commercial waterfront that shaped Exeter’s prosperity. Converted buildings now provide places to browse or pause over a meal. Keep this as a flexible waterside outing, turning back when you have had enough, rather than committing to a long canal walk simply because the path continues.

Before you go

The quay sits below the central streets. Allow energy for the return climb, or arrange transport from the lower area. Cobbled sections can be awkward, especially in wet weather; avoid treating a short distance as an easy access guarantee.

The practical details

Where to find it
Historic Quayside beside the River Exe
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
No ticket is needed for the public quayside. Food, shopping and water-based activities cost extra. There is no boat journey or river crossing required for this suggested walk; check weather and local notices before extending along the river.
Access and getting around
Some quay surfaces are cobbled. Approaches from the centre vary in gradient and may involve steps; Stepcote Hill is steep and cobbled. Choose arrival and return routes for your needs and heed local closures or high-water conditions.

Visiting with children
Supervise children beside the water and where pedestrians share space with other users. A short out-and-back beside the historic buildings can be enough; boat trips and equipment hire are separate activities with their own rules.

Make it part of your day

Allow 45–90 minutes, plus a meal for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
