FALKIRK GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

Earthworks on the Antonine frontier / NEAR FALKIRK

Rough Castle Roman Fort

Read the shape of the ground to understand a Roman fort and its defences. Rough Castle rewards a slower look at banks, ditches and the landscape rather than expectations of a roofed castle or reconstructed town. It is a worthwhile outdoor archaeology visit for people who enjoy imagining how a place worked, with a different atmosphere from Falkirk’s modern engineering landmarks.
