FORT WILLIAM GUIDE Independent ideas for your day out

A full railway day to Mallaig and back / FORT WILLIAM

The Jacobite from Fort William

Take the heritage train from Fort William through Highland scenery to the fishing port of Mallaig, returning on the same excursion. Crossing Glenfinnan Viaduct is one part of a much longer journey, with a break at the coast for lunch. Give the railway most of the day rather than adding it between mountain activities.

Before you go

Book the return excursion and read your confirmation carefully. The current morning and afternoon services have different seasonal end dates; leave a generous margin before any onward train, coach or dinner reservation.

The practical details

Where to find it
Fort William railway station, Tom-na-Faire, Fort William
Directions and arrival information ↗
Tickets and booking
Advance booking is strongly advised; any same-day seats are limited and not guaranteed. For 2026, the advertised morning season ends 23 October and the afternoon season ends 25 September. This is a return trip, not a one-way ticket. Diesel substitution or disruption is possible; follow the operator’s latest notice.
Access and getting around
Heritage carriages have narrow circulation and the operator says wheelchairs cannot enter the seating area; motorised scooters are not carried. Discuss boarding, seating, foldable-chair storage and toilets with the railway before paying. Step-free station access does not make the carriages accessible.
Official access information ↗
Visiting with children
Choose this for children comfortable with several hours of seated travel. Bring suitable snacks and quiet activities, keep everyone back from platform edges, and allow a simple lunch during the Mallaig stop. A particular locomotive or steam haulage cannot be guaranteed.

Practical information checked 15 September 2026. Confirm anything essential to your visit with the venue.

Make it part of your day

Allow about 6 hours, plus check-in for the visit, plus travel and breaks. This is a suggested planning allowance; opening times, access and availability may affect your plans.
