Walk beside the flight of eight locks on the Caledonian Canal and look at how boats move between different water levels. The setting gives engineering enthusiasts and curious families something to watch without a long museum visit. A boat may take around ninety minutes to negotiate the flight, but you do not need to stay for a complete passage.

Treat boat movements as a bonus rather than a scheduled show. Banavie is outside central Fort William; choose a local bus, train or taxi with a checked return instead of assuming the locks are beside the main railway station.

Tickets and booking: Public access is free, subject to local works and operational restrictions. Canal navigation has a seasonal schedule, so free access does not guarantee moving boats. Food, parking and transport are separate.
Access and getting around: The canal operator lists accessible access and a family-friendly path, but the route rises beside working locks. Choose a suitable side and turning point, obey operational barriers and keep clear of lock equipment. Ask about current path works and nearby toilet facilities if these affect your visit.

Visiting with children: Keep children close beside deep water and moving gates; this is a working canal. Count the locks or compare water levels, and turn back before a wait for boats becomes frustrating. Dogs should be on leads.
