The Stray
Take a short walk across the broad grassland that gives central Harrogate its unusually open southern edge. Tree-lined paths, space for a picnic and seasonal planting offer a simple break between town visits. Choose one section rather than trying to cover the whole area as a compulsory circuit.
Local investigation works are scheduled from 17 September 2026 for about six weeks on grass between Montpellier Hill and the Esplanade. Follow local fencing and choose another section if necessary.

- General access is free. Events and temporary works can affect particular areas; the September 2026 borehole investigation is localized and does not indicate closure of the whole Stray.
- Access and getting around
- Roads divide the Stray into sections. Choose suitable crossings and firm paths; grass can be wet or uneven. Plan toilets and refreshments separately in town.

- A useful space for a simple picnic or games when conditions suit. Keep children away from surrounding roads and any fenced works. Spring blossom is seasonal, not a year-round attraction.
