Choose a few objects or rooms to explore closely rather than trying to absorb every label before heading onto the village streets.

Before you go

Check the opening date first: Tuesdays are currently closed, with Monday closures also applying outside the summer pattern. There is no timed entry, but small rooms and priority group visits can mean a short wait. The museum has no café, so plan lunch on Main Street.

Tickets and booking: Buy online or at the Welcome Desk; ordinary tickets last twelve months under the museum’s conditions. Check current opening and last admission, and book special events or group arrangements separately. A necessary carer can enter free. There is no luggage storage, so travel light.
Access and getting around: Ask at the rear Welcome Desk for the accessible entrance. The route includes a 55cm doorway; discuss chair dimensions and the available loan chair. Upstairs requires 16 stone steps with a handrail and there is no lift; a ground-floor ticket is available. Visitor facilities include an accessible toilet, baby changing and Changing Places. The surrounding streets are steep and cobbled.

Visiting with children: Children aged eleven and under enter free as part of a family group; ages twelve to sixteen have a paid teen ticket. Children’s panels and upstairs interactive displays support a shorter visit. Ask staff about ground-floor pram access; prams cannot go upstairs. Calm bags and hip seats can be borrowed.
