Hay Castle

Make the castle your main historic visit, with time for its interpretation, changing exhibitions and the view from the restored building. It offers a different perspective from the bookshops below, connecting the town’s border setting with its later cultural life. Choose the rooms and displays that interest you and leave space for a pause rather than assuming every visit must include a guided tour.

Before you go

The Great Hall, café and shop are free to enter, but the fuller castle visit is paid for most adults. A free-area visit is not the same as admission to all exhibitions and visitor spaces.

Tickets and booking: Check current admission, exhibitions and private-event closures. Tours are separately priced and timed; ordinary opening is currently 10am–4pm daily, subject to exceptions.
Access and getting around: The operator lists ramped approach access and a lift to all floors except the cellar; its cellar film is available on iPads elsewhere. Accessible toilets are provided. Contact the castle for specific arrangements and check temporary restrictions.

Visiting with children: Current general entry is free for visitors aged 18 and under, but accompanying adults normally pay. Ask about available sensory bags and choose age-appropriate displays; events have separate terms.
