Mill and Marsh Meadows
Give the river a place in the day without booking a boat. Mill Meadows offers space for a picnic, a play break or watching passing craft; continuing into Marsh Meadows makes a longer outing when paths and weather suit. This is a useful place to slow down after the town streets, with no requirement to follow a long-distance route.
Before you go
Keep the route flexible after heavy rain. Stay on open paths and turn back if the riverside is flooded; a meadow stroll does not require crossing Marsh Lock or following an onward walking route.

- Ordinary park access is free. Parking, golf, refreshments and any separately operated rides or events can cost extra. Check event notices before expecting a quiet picnic spot.
- Access and getting around
- The promenade and grassland are different surfaces. Use the council’s park information to choose a route; wet ground can change what is manageable for a wheelchair or pushchair. Ask about current facilities rather than relying on the former museum.

- Mill Meadows has play areas, but the river edge needs close adult supervision. Keep a picnic and play visit separate from a waterside walk if children are tired.
